4th International Conference on Hydrology and Water Resources
Jointly Organized by
CEWRE & NCEG

CEWRE-NCEG 4th International Conference on Hydrology and Water Resources Concludes, Urging Science-Based Solutions for Water Security. The two-day 4th International Conference on Hydrology and Water Resources 2026 successfully concluded at the Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering (CEWRE), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore. The event was jointly organized by CEWRE and the National Centre of Excellence in Geology (NCEG), bringing together global experts to address pressing water challenges.
The conference served as a vital platform for dialogue on a wide array of themes critical to the field, including the management of reservoirs, rivers and floods, glacier dynamics, irrigation systems, water quality, food security, climate change adaptation, hydropower generation, and the application of modern technologies.
The event featured a distinguished lineup of international experts from Australia, the Netherlands, the United States, Iran, Bangladesh, Qatar, and Germany. They were joined by national experts from across Pakistan, who presented their latest research and shared valuable experiences with a diverse audience of academics, industry professionals, and government officials.
Key discussions highlighted the immense pressures on water resources, including climate change, population growth, agricultural demands, and the increasing frequency of hydrological extremes such as floods and prolonged droughts. A significant focus was placed on innovative solutions through the integration of modern technologies, including GIS/RS, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and advanced hydrological modeling.
The conference distilled three critical messages for the path forward: first, the need for science-based solutions and policies rooted in robust scientific data and research; second, the necessity of collaboration and regional cooperation to manage shared water resources effectively; and third, the intrinsic link between water availability and the region's food security, underscoring the importance of water and food security.
The conference was organized under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Atiq-ur-Rehman Tariq (Director, CEWRE) as Chair, and Prof. Dr. Liaqat Ali (Director, NCEG) as Co-Chair. Dr. Kaleem Sarwar (CEWRE) served as the Conference Secretary. The organizing committee also included Dr. Amjad Masood (CEWRE), Dr. Zaheer Muhammad Malik (CEWRE), Dr. Muhammad Waseem (CEWRE), Dr. Muhammad Ali (NCEG), Dr. Seema Anjum Khattak (NCEG), and Dr. Saad Khan (NCEG) as active members.
The research outcomes from the conference will be published in the conference Journal of Himalayan Earth Sciences X-Category journal published by NCEG.
Engr. Tayyab Farid, Director General of the Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA), Punjab, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the critical importance of water resources and the significant challenges facing Pakistan. He lauded the pivotal role that institutions like CEWRE and NCEG play in contributing research-based solutions to these national challenges.
