Workshop Organized by Asian Council of Science Editors (ACSE) at the Marriot Hotel Islamabad

Extract from the ACSE Vision and Mission: Publications of scientific research have an immense responsibility towards the community. The current and future development exclusively depends on the high quality research work in science and technology. The capacity to write in an understandable, educational and appealing way is a vital part of the scientist's discovery as it allows the whole scientific community and other readers to share the true essence of basic scientific findings. This responsibility has been uniformly recognized within the scientific publishing communities in developed nations. The scientific literature published in advanced countries has successfully adapted to strict conformity with the established modern standards of publishing.
 
The Asian Council of Science Editors under their vision manages to organize workshop for the capacity buildings of the science Editors-in-chief, Editors and Associate Editors. One such one day workshop was organized 4th of the February, 2015 at the Marriot Hotel Islamabad. Dr. Elizabeth Wager, Publication Consultant, Sideview and Chair of the Committee on Publication Ethics, 2009-2012 was the resource person at the workshop. The delegates included the Chairman Pakistan Council for Science and Technology and Executive Director HEC. The workshop was attended by almost 50 Editors-in-chief, Editors and Associate Editors from across the country.

Prof. Dr. Tahir Shah (Chief Editor Journal of Himalayan Earth Sciences) and Dr. Irfan U. Jan (Associate Editors Journal of Himalayan Earth Sciences) attended the workshop.
During workshop the following essential agenda points were discussed;

    • Developing and maintaining effective journal policies.
    • Relationship with authors/readers/ peer reviewers.
    • Relationship between editors and publishers.
    • Commercial and business ethics.
    • Detecting misconduct.
    • Responding to cases of possible misconduct
    • Liaising with institutions
    • Correcting the literature.

     

    During the sessions interesting discussion undertook between the 50 Editors-in-chief, Editors and Associate Editors of various science journals from across the country and the participants agreed to develop the ethics policies of the journals in line with the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE), an internationally established working group for devising and improving journals policies.

    At the end of the workshop certificates distribution ceremony took place, which was followed by group photo and conclusive remarks from Dr. Elizabeth Wager.
