The National Centre of Excellence in Geology (NCEG), University of Peshawar is a leading Earth Sciences Research and Higher Education institution in the country. The Centre offers programs including M.S,M.Phil,Ph.D. and Post-Graduate Diploma awarded by the University of Peshawar. A host of sophisticated research laboratories including Electron Microprobe, XRF, XRD, Geochemistry, GIS/RS, GPS Geodesy, Petroleum Geochemistry, Hydrogeophysics, Geophysics and Petrography/Microscopy are located at the Centre catering needs for academia and industry. The Centre has a strong faculty with 15Ph.D, 9MS/M.Phil, assisted by over 20 Research Associates with Master degrees. So far 22Ph.D, 62M.Phil and 224 PGD have qualified from this Centre, employed in leading R&D organizations and industries. Centre has published over 580 Research Papers, 12 Books and 6 Coloured Geological Maps, in addition to the Centre’s annual research journal entitled “Journal of Himalayan Earth Sciences”. The Centre’s archives of books, maps and journals have been recognized by HEC as the National Library of Earth Sciences. Recognizing Centre’s contributions in the field of Earth & Environmental Sciences, the Government of Pakistan has awarded the Centre’s faculty with 5 Civil Awards and 4 Presidential Awards. Centre has just completed two developmental projects, and is in the process of completing an ECNEC approved PC-I Project of establishing a New Campus (academic and residential) with 22 laboratories and 20 Foreign Ph.D.fellowships.

For the Session 2012-2013 NCEG seeks applications for admission in the following programs of studies:

1.  M.S./M.Phil/M.Phil leading to Ph.D/Ph.D in GEOLOGY (15 seats)
Specializations

  • Structural Geology/Tectonics
  • Stratigraphy/Paleontology
  • Mineralogy/Petrology/Geochemistry
  • Petroleum Geology
  • Economic Geology
  • Engineering Geology
  • Sedimentology
  • Hydrogeology
  • Geomorphology

 

Applicants with terminal degree in the fields of Geology, Geophysics and Engineering (Geotechnical/Mining/Civil) from the HEC recognized universities are eligible for admission.
2.  M.S./M.Phil/M.Phil leading to Ph.D/Ph.D in GEOPHYSICS (5 seats)
Specializations

  • Earthquake Seismology
  • Hydrogeophysics
  • Exploration Seismology
  • Petrophysics
  • Gravity
  • Magnetism

Applicants with terminal degree in the fields of Geophysics and Geology will be preferred but those holding Physics, Mathematics and Engineering (Geotechnical/Mining/Civil) degrees are also eligible for admission.

3.  M.S./M.Phil/M.Phil leading to Ph.D/Ph.D in ENVIRONMENTAL GEOSCIENCES (5 seats)
Specializations

  • Natural Hazards
  • Environmental Geochemistry
  • Medical Geology

Applicants with terminal degree in the fields relevant to Earth and Environmental Sciences/Engineering from the HEC recognized universities are eligible for admission.
3.  M.S./M.Phil/M.Phil leading to Ph.D/Ph.D in GEOSPATIAL SCIENCES (GIS/RS) (5 seats)

  • GIS/Remote Sensing
  • GPS Geodesy

Applicants with terminal degree in the fields relevant to Earth and Environmental Sciences/Engineering from the HEC recognized universities are eligible for admission.
Eligibility
MS,M.Phil,M.S/M.Phil leading to PhD
i.      Relevant Master's degree or 4-years education after intermediate (128-132 Credit hours), with at least Second Division or a CGPA of 2.50 from a recognized University.
ii.   Candidates must have passed GAT(General) by scoring at least 50% marks.
PhD

  • Candidates having M Phil of 18 years education with CGPA at least 3.00 equivalent in their M Phil Course Work will be eligible and required to pass(i.e. score at least 60 percent marks) the GRE subject test, preferably prior to admission or transfer, as the case may be.

IMPORTANT

  • Candidates with their terminal degree examination passed in the current or the one immediately preceding session will be preferred.
  • Candidates employed in any Government or Semi-Government Department/Organization must submit No Objection Certificate from the concerned Department/Organization within 30 days after initial selection failing which the selection will be deemed to have lapsed.
  • Provision of hostel accommodation is not mandatory and is subject to availability of seats.
  • In case of ambiguity about eligibility the opinion of the Graduate Studies Committee of the Centre taken into consideration will be final.
  • The names  of shortlisted candidates shall be notified on Monday, September 24, 2012. The candidates are advised to closely follow the NCEG website (http://nceg.upesh.edu.pk/) for the interview date and other relevant information.
