Course contents:
Mantle plumes and the generation of alkaline magmas; Crustal contamination and its role in alkaline igneous petrogenesis; Metasomatism and its role in the formation of alkaline igneous rocks; Geochemistry and isotope geochemistry of alkaline magmas; Petrology of specific alkaline rock types, such as carbonatites, lamproites, and kimberlites. Applications of alkaline igneous rocks to mineral exploration and resource assessment: Alkaline igneous rocks as pathfinder minerals for ore deposits; The potential of alkaline igneous provinces for critical minerals and rare earth elements; Case studies of major alkaline igneous provinces around the world: East African Rift System; Kola Peninsula; Canadian Shield; Siberian Platform; West Australian Craton; The alkaline igneous province of Pakistan
