National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), Lahore, Pakistan

The devastating earthquake that struck Azad Kashmir and Northern Pakistan on October 08, 2005 triggered a large number of small and large landslides in the area. These landslides caused huge damage to life and property and posed the risk of further landslide activity, especially during rainy season. One of the most devastating landslide occurred near the town of Hattian Bala that formed a 500 ft high natural dam on a tributary Nalla of Jhelum River. This paper presents the methodology adopted to study the problems associated with these landslides with the aim of proposing mitigation measures. It discusses the sequence of work, starting from desk study to the development of landslides reporting forms, analysis of feed back and design of remedial works for various typical landslides. The design remedial works for the Hattian Bala landslide dam involved extensive studies involving geology, hydrology and geotechnical engineering. The proposed remedial works were successfully implemented and are performing well.
